Albatros 2 May 2009: Locals

Jeffreys Bay is where the internationally acclaimed Billabong Surf Pro competition takes place every June.

Surfers come from all over the world to ride the supertubes for prize money, but the winnings are pretty much dominated by world famous sponsered surfers. Everything associated with surfing can be found here. Billabong, Roxy, Quicksilver and many other clothing manufacturers have set up shop here. There is a choice between top quality market priced clothing or the more frequently visited factory shops, where plenty of surf gear is available at bargain prices.

J-Bay is a short fourty minute drive away from Port Elizabeth.

It offers a fantastic holiday for travellers, offering wide open beaches, plenty of surfing spots, and activities such as horse riding on the beach and wild life safaris offered in and around the area. The shell festival explodes in town in September each year.

When things quieten down throughout the year, locals are spoilt with the sardine run from February to March, when the entire bay fills up with dolphins. They cruise up and down the coast not far from the beach, jumping with joy. Up to four bottlenose dolphins can be spotted surfing on the same wave just a 30 minute walk along the beach out of town from surf hot spot Albatros. They sure know how to have fun.

One of our surfers has been caught in the water surrounded by three whales. An experience out of this world in wild African water.

J-Bay is growing rapidly, so keen investors should not miss out on the prime affordable real estate still available. This is a place where large plots do not have to break the bank, with beautiful weather pretty much all year round. It offers properties with lawns sprawling right onto the surfing beaches or tucked away in the privacy of the kloof.

Gardens on the prestigious 'kloof' form part of a nature reserve and with a small stream running through the borders.

Surfing is such an institution here that the local primary school includes days out on the beach in its physical education cirriculum, and the school offers surf club lessons for children.
